Tioga was founded in 1902 and named by settlers from Tioga, New York. The population of the city increased dramatically in the 1950s following the discovery of oil in the Bakken. That growth was reignited with the shale drilling in 2009. Tioga is also home to the Hess natural gas plant and transport facility. Nearby are many smaller agricultural communities. Ray and Epping are of significance based on location and proximity to oil production and transport.
